Why multitasking is killing your business growth!
Women often joke that men can’t multi-task but the truth is that neither can women, not effectively anyway.
Multi-tasking is the easiest way to feel super busy but actually get nothing done.
When we think we’re multitasking, we’re actually just rapidly switching our focus between projects.
This reduces accuracy and increases the mental strain. The work that you produce may even be total rubbish and need to be redone - the exact opposite of being productive!
Are you multi-tasking all day long? Hopping from one job to another?
Do you feel overwhelmed and unable to prioritise your workload effectively?
Do very important tasks get left until the last minute, adding to your stress levels, or maybe even missed altogether?
The truth is that you are not going to grow your business by trying to do everything all at once. You will be very ‘busy’ but not get any meaningful tasks completed that move your business forward.
Several studies show that it takes an average of 23 minutes to refocus your attention on a task after a distraction or a switch to a different task.
Instead, focusing on a batch of similar tasks at once can -
Reduce Your Stress/overwhelm - By grouping similar tasks on your to-do list will give you control of your workload and reduce overwhelm.
Increase Productivity - Grouping similar tasks together means you’re wasting less brain power on switching projects and devoting your productive hours to the high-priority work that needs it most. The increased organisation will save you from looming deadlines.
Get ahead - Batched work can mean you are ahead of the game with some tasks - blog posts for the month done ahead of time etc. You will be more organised and less stressed.
Improve Your Focus - Stop switching from one task to another and allow your brain to stay in one mode for longer. This will improve your ability to focus over time and will also reduce brain fatigue.
Give it a try and see if you can take back control of your to-do list. Once you have reduced the overwhelm you will even be able to schedule some time to work on that new project that you have been meaning to work on for ages - this is where the growth in your business is!
